Most people do not notice any damage to their Outdoor Rattan Set until they clean it. This is why I always recommend that you clean your rattan outdoor furniture at least twice a year. First when you are putting it out at the beginning of the season and for the second time when the season is coming to its end and you are putting it away for the winter. If you by any chance spot any damage, then you should take action immediately and start with the repair.

So how do you do it? Don’t worry, the process is really simple. I did some research and cleaned & fixed my own rattan furniture before writing this article. It now contains all the important steps, so you should be good to go after you have read it.

Prepare your furniture

Make sure you remove any cushions that come with your furniture. There's a separate blog post on how to clean those - coming soon. You should also move your furniture into an open area of the garden or on the drive, where it doesn't matter if you make a bit of a splash!

Get rid of any mud or dust

Use the stiff brush to remove any surface dirt from the Insahre furniture . The bristles will penetrate into the texture of the rattan and loosen any mud or grime. However, don't be too aggressive as you could ruin the furniture's finish. Next, use your vacuum cleaner's brush attachment to get rid of the dust that has inevitably built up over the months.

Start cleaning!

Now, you can mix a small measurement of the washing up liquid to a bucket of warm water. With this soapy water, you can use the soft cloth to apply the solution all over the surfaces of your furniture. Be sure you don't miss any hidden or awkward spots! Allow the furniture to soak for a few minutes.

Rinse away the suds

Next, it's time to rinse off the soapy liquid. Use your garden hose to wash away all of the suds. Make sure you keep your hose at one of the lower, more gentle settings so you don't put too much pressure on the furniture. If you've not got access to a hose, you'll have to pour over buckets of cold water until all the soapiness has been rinsed away.

How to Care for Rattan and Resin Wicker Furniture

Like most beautiful, refined things, rattan is a little high-maintenance. You’ll hear rattan and wicker thrown around synonymously. But there’s a big difference. Wicker actually refers to the weaving technique — not the material — and different types of wicker require different types of care.

At Article, we make most of our natural wicker furniture from rattan, a climbing vine found in tropical paradises. While robust enough for Tarzan to swing on, rattan is still susceptible to the elements, especially when left in its natural form. We recommend keeping your natural rattan indoors, unless you’re just using it temporarily for a dry afternoon outside. Exposure to water can cause rattan to swell, and too much sun can cause it to dry out.

f you love the look of rattan but want something that can survive outside, synthetic resin wicker. It looks just like natural rattan, but is made specifically to better withstand the elements.

To clean, it’s always good to keep things gentle. Use a soft cloth and warm water mixed with pH-neutral soap. Avoid scrubbing and water saturation, even when challenging a stubborn smudge. Allow the piece to air dry when you’ve finished.
